As a classic crime caper film it was good in its day, but now seems tired and slow. After about 5 minutes negotiating the menus, I had what I wanted and can now enjoy the film I had a problem getting the English-language audio and no subtitles! The acting is first rate and it strikes a nice balance between humor and adventure I found it odd that Dassin films his wife very unflatteringly and there is little or no chemistry between her an Schell. The Blu-ray could have been better. His son, Joe Dassin, was a popular French singer in the 1960s and '70s, with such hits as "Bip Bip," "L'Eté Indien" and "Aux Champs-Èlysées." Still some thing here and there to enjoy and many will violently disagree with me about MM. , She had sibling Spiros. She married Jules Dassin.Melina died on March 6, 1994 at New York City at 73 years old. A special shout out to Akim Tamiroff, stalwart supporting actor in so many movies from the 1930s on, as the drunk landlord. Not quite as exciting this time round but nonetheless worth watching. Dans le quartier israélite de Betolan, le cimetière entouré d'un mur blanc et les hautes silhouettes des cocotiers contre le dur azur du ciel. Slow and boring, the movie didn't get going until an hour and a half had passed. Lovely film, although old but still interesting to watch. That was the reason I put 4 stars. Forget the tropes of the time in which the movie was made; it's a fun movie, meant to be taken and enjoyed that way. Poor production and very slow moving plot. Includes Greek song sung by Melina Mercouri.
Oh, well, a little birdie can spoil a robbery in this case. Almost put off by other review saying this Blu Ray wasn't any better than the standard DVD...Well I can tell you it is excellent...being an ex Cinema Projectionist of the sixties, I ran this film for two weeks so know what the 35mm print was like. - what is it with the French and their insistence on permanent subtitles??!)

It is one of those great caper films where you root for the crooks to get away with the crime and enjoy the accidents that disrupt the "perfect crime". The 1964 speed of action cannot compare with the 2020's, so it felt a little slow to me. Director Jules Dassin rethought his excellent (grimly realistic) caper flick "Raffifi" and gave its follow up a glossy, colorful sheen.
Nine years after creating a classic heist movie, Dassin reworked it in a colourful and light-hearted form.

Mais c'est au cimetière israélite d' Hollywood que ses parents, le célèbre cinéaste Jules Topkapi is a great film and I was delighted to see that it is available as a DVD; however, in this version there are so many foreign-language dubbed soundtracks and subtitles to choose from (it seems to default to dubbed French and French subtitles! How ironic that as carefully planned and executed as the robbery is, the thieves get caught and put in prison. Alas, Dassin restricts her dramatic talents in this film to simply oozing charm throughout. If you have it on DVD, it might be best to pass this offering.
Son grand-père, Samuel Dassin, était un immigré juif russe originaire d'Odessa. The DVD was Letterbox 1:85-1 so lost a great deal of quality...the Blu ray is stunning! It does move slowly and is terribly overacted but it is still a joy to watch. And there's an overlong artsy opening with said Melinda mumbling incomprehensibly over some bewildering visuals but after that it becomes pretty enjoyable and I loved the location of Istanbul in the 60s 4 Stars for the Movie None for no subtitles of any kind. The film? Just took my breath away! How young and handsome he is in this movie. That's not to say the film doesn't have it's moments, but again that depends on how much you like Ustinov and the stars. One of my favorite films since it was released in 1964. It was dismal and not even the picturesque ancient city of Istanbul could make this turkey sing. Includes song "Mitros and Mirina." If you haven't listened to Joe Dassin, I so recommend " L'ete Indien"; " Et is tu n'existais pas"... A voice made of honey. This film brought back many happy memories. The lead female actress was overly dramatic.
