There's not much in the way of keyboards or symphonics, but the album does close with some sparingly used brass instruments on the sinister sounding Den Siste (great to hear a song in native Norwegian again!) This album is a step towards a more aggressive direction again after the black 'n' roll-oriented Now, Diabolical.It's stern and fairly minimal metal that accomplishes its goals using both black and heavy metal techniques, miscellaneous rhythm play like simple polyrhythms and, of course, lots of repetition.
More like a continuation of it. Satyricon is an influential Norwegian Commando 02. It sounds a lot like Diabolical Now. Satyricon, however, is one of my favourite bands and "Dark Medieval Times" was their best album by far, but as a whole, Satyricon has evolved musically and lyrically and "The Age of Nero" is still a great album, all things considered.
